|Artist as an Entrepreneur Returns to South Florida|
Broward Cultural Division, The Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC), and ArtServe, Inc. announce The Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute (AEI) for South Florida artists to be presented on four Saturdays in June 2011, at ArtServe, Inc., 1350 East Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.
AEI will be offered as 18 classes convening during full-day sessions (9:00 am – 6:00 pm) on June 4, 11 & 18, and a Business Plan Clinic and Workshop on June 25, 2011 (9:00 am – 2:00 pm). The Business Plan Clinic guides participants through preparation of a simple business plan, an essential tool for any artist. In addition, participants will learn how to work effectively with lenders to obtain financial support through the Artist Micro Credit Program, a community-based revolving loan program, designed to assist resident Broward County practicing professional and emerging artists. Designed to help artists operate in the marketplace more successfully, the AEI course curriculum covers all aspects of developing an artistic business.
AEI is led by a premier faculty composed of leading business practitioners and artists familiar with arts and culture from the South Florida region. Faculty members instruct artists through a series of lectures, panels and discussions.

|Two Mini-Grant Workshops: One for Individual Artists, One for Not-for-Profit Organizations|
Broward County Commission's Cultural Division invites Broward-based individual artists to a Mini-Grant Program workshop offered Tuesday, May 3, 2011 in the Broward County Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The workshop will be offered at 6:00 pm.
The purpose of this mini-grant program is to assist eligible Broward-based practicing professional artists to fund small but complete, cultural projects in Broward County, for which applicants have not received grant monies through any other Cultural Division program. The project must be an exhibition, a performance, or other arts activity.
Broward Cultural Division invites Broward County Broward County not-for-profit cultural organizations to a Mini-Grant Program workshop offered on Wednesday, May 4, 2011. This session will be held in the Broward County Main Library, Bienes Conference Room, 100 S Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The workshop will be offered at 6:00 pm.
The purpose of this mini-grant program is to assist eligible Broward County not-for-profit cultural organizations with annual operating revenues of less than $100,000, to fund small cultural projects for which applicants have not received grant monies through any other Cultural Division program. The project must be an exhibition, a performance, or other arts activity. The workshop will also cover how to submit an online application.
ALL Mini-Grant awards will be awarded on a funds-available basis. The next Mini-Grant Program application deadline is June 1, 2011 for projects implemented after October 1 through September 30, 2012. There is a limited amount of funding available for this grant cycle.

|Artist John Bowen Featured at Lee Wagener Art Gallery Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport|

This month, The Art of Being There, an exhibition by artist John Bowen, opened at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The exhibition, in the Lee Wagener Art Gallery, located at Terminal 2 Departure Level, will run for three months, through July 4, 2011.
John Bowen has lived in South Florida since 1970, and spent 45 years in the commercial art field- the past 30 of those years, painting watercolors. He is a signature member of both the Florida Watercolor Society and the Gold Coast Watercolor Society, and has been published in multiple national and international magazines, including American Artist Magazine and Watercolor Magic.
The Lee Wagener Art Gallery, supported by Broward Cultural Division's Public Art & Design Program and the Broward County Aviation Department, offers Broward artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a prominent, high traffic area. Artists are selected through the Public Art & Design Program and exhibits are changed every three months. Also on view in the gallery is the public art video, Tree-Rain, a permanent artwork by Broward-based artists Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov.

|Edgar P. Mills Multi-Purpose Center Re-Opens in Broward County|
Family Ties that Bind
The original Mills Center was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in October 2005. Like the legendary Phoenix, the center has risen again at the same site, stronger and even better. Broward County’s Family Success Centers are a one-stop source of health and social services, assisting individuals and families in setting goals, learning skills and accessing services they need to build a stronger, healthier, self-sufficient family unit. Now once again, the Edgar P. Mills Multi-Purpose Center can fulfill its mission of improving the quality of lives of children, individuals and families in Broward County.
The Edgar P. Mills Multi-Purpose Center Public Art Project is today the home of six sculptures, commissioned through the Broward Cultural Division Public Art & Design Program, and honoring the individuals who serve and the committed, staff housed in this new facility. Artist Cheryl foster created the sculptures to honor the elders, the young, the families, those that may have survived or are on the verge of succumbing to unforeseen circumstances and are seeking a helping hand. Like these individuals, the sculptures stand tall, unbowed, and unflinching. The Family Ties That Bind illustrates the glue of family, while Keys to Life offers the hope of shelter, earning power and new beginnings. The child image is Blanketed With Love , a dream we have for all our children. The Vessel stands firmly planted, protecting the seeds to our future, as the elder with raised arms, is Pulsating With Life. The Phoenix arched to the sun, greets each visitor, exuding strength, renewal, hope and the promise a golden future.
|Florida League of Cities Launches Initiative to Maximize Cultural Assets and Promote Economic Development|
Thank you to Florida League of Cities President Joy Cooper for her presidential platform – Culture Builds Florida Communities. She is committed to provide Florida cities with tools and knowledge to maximize their cultural assets during these tough economic times. In partnership with Washington, D.C.-based Partners for Livable Communities, the Florida League of Cities is offering five workshops throughout the state.
The first workshop was held in Fort Walton Beach on March 4, and the second in Fort Lauderdale on April 8, where presentations were heard from Glenda Hood, former Florida Secretary of State and Bob McNulty, Founder/President, Partners for Livable Communities and Johnnie Aycokc, Strategic Management Associates, LLC.
The workshops bring together city officials and staff, business leaders, representatives from the arts and cultural sectors, and leaders of local and regional foundations to discuss and strategize how the arts and culture resources can be used to promote local economic development, revitalize cities and neighborhoods, create jobs and assist at-risk citizens.

|Applying for Project Grant Funding for the Artist|
Broward County Commission’s Cultural Division, Nova Southeastern University, and the South Florida Artists Association will host a unique training session to assist individual artists, working in all disciplines, with preparing effective proposals for “project-based” grant funding. The workshop, Applying for Project Grant Funding for the Artist will be held at Room 4009 - Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, Nova Southeastern University, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr., Blvd., in Fort Lauderdale, on Saturday, May 14, 2011, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
Participants will learn how to: develop an artist’s biography and artist’s statement; prepare an audience profile (identify the qualities and characteristics of audiences attracted by one’s art work and utilize the profile in the proposal process); create a proposal description based on the project’s vision; develop a project/proposal budget (w/case study to explore the budget development process); preparing work samples. This workshop will help artists plan and prepare successful proposals for residencies, project funding, professional development, career advancement, and fellowship opportunities.
In addition, the session will prepare Broward artists who wish to learn how to prepare a submission to the Creative Capital professional development seminar: Internet for Artists Weekend Workshop: Using the Internet to Build Community, Promote Your Work and Increase Administrative Effectiveness, and the Division’s Mini-Grant Program project grant for Broward artists. Broward artists will submit proposals to both opportunities by an online application and will be chosen by a competitive review and panel process.
The facilitator, Luz Rodriguez with Visionary Allies, is a seasoned fundraising professional, educator, and artist who combines her artistic sensitivities with her knowledge of U.S. philanthropy to guide and inspire artists of all genres to equip them with the information and tools they need to bring their project visions to reality. Her professional development workshops for artists have been offered nationally and internationally at Artist Space in New York and Centro Leon Cultural Center in the Dominican Republic.
The workshop fee is $25 which includes resource materials. Registrants will receive a parking pass for the garage near the library.
