South Runway Closed For Extended Period
In preparation for the South Runway Expansion Project, the South Runway (9R-27L), closed on Tuesday, April 17, 2012. This runway primarily handles general aviation aircraft.
This closure has limited impact to passengers on large commercial airlines. Smaller general aviation and commuter aircraft that use the South Runway, will now operate on the main North Runway. During periods of heavy demand, flights may use the Crosswind Runway in addition to the North Runway.
The South Runway must close to allow construction crews to build the structures over Federal Highway and the FEC Railroad tracks. The new expanded South Runway is expected to reopen in late 2014.
