Emerging Cultural Leaders Expand Their Horizons

When Nerissa Street decided to take part in the The Emerging Cultural Leaders Program presented by the Broward County Cultural Council, she hoped it would be a way to connect with others in the arts community and share her own experience. She was right.
“I decided to apply for the program because I wanted to contribute my experience in coaching and passion about arts advocacy to South Florida arts and culture. I also wanted to belong to a group of young professionals with the same mindset,” she says.
The resident performer and filmmaker, also known as the “Trans-former,” lives and works at the Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts. She holds degrees in both business and theater and wanted to bridge the gap between the arts and business. Street also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of The Artist Initiative, Inc. in Pembroke Pines.
“As an Emerging Leader, you'll need to have your eye on local trends, and be willing to bring them to the table. It's really about making the arts more relevant to our business community,” she adds.
The networking aspect of the Emerging Cultural Leaders has been a true reward for Street. “Connecting with other professionals reinforced my long-standing belief in the commercial and community value of culture. It also increased my visibility to the arts community, and as an emerging actress and filmmaker, that's vital.”
She looks forward to continuing inspiring others as a teaching artist and coach for adults and teens. She has several trademarked workshops and is starting a series of film screenings to engage and entertain audiences. Her first guest speaker is the producer of Miami's 48 Hour Film Project.
Kristin Snyder also plans to put the valuable experience she gained from the Emerging Cultural Leaders Program to very good use for the cultural community of Broward County.
“I look forward to putting the leadership skills that I have learned in the Emerging Cultural Leaders Program to work over the next year, as I have recently been nominated to the Board of Directors of the Cultural Foundation,” she explains. Snyder is an estate planning attorney with the law firm of Snyder & Snyder, P.A.
“I enjoy working with clients with large art collections to provide creative options to help them turn their personal collections into lasting legacies. In addition to being an Emerging Cultural Leader, I also enjoy serving on the Public Art and Design Task force for the Broward County 2020 Cultural Plan,” she adds.
An art aficionado, Snyder gained an appreciation and passion for the arts while studying at the University of Florida. She interned with Sotheby’s in both New York and Melbourne, Australia. It was in Australia where she “participated in the largest sale of Aboriginal Art in the world.”
Upon her return to South Florida after completing law school, she wanted to combine her love for the arts with law. “I was looking for ways to get involved in the community and find that cultural arts buzz that I found when studying abroad in other countries, such as Melbourne, Australia, Tokyo, Japan, Paris, France and Capetown, South Africa. That’s when I heard about the Emerging Cultural Leaders program, and immediately knew it was a great way to get re-acquainted with the climate of cultural arts in Broward County and meet new like-minded, culturally aware friends,” she says.
For a period of two years, the members immerse themselves in learning all facets of arts leadership through The Emerging Cultural Leaders Program presented by the Broward County Cultural Council. In doing so, the next generation of cultural leaders will be ready to take on the challenges presented to them with a changing cultural and financial climate. Upon completion, participants then may become eligible to receive recommendations for either board membership of a cultural organization or recommendation to serve on the Broward Cultural Council.
About the Program
The Broward Cultural Council’s Emerging Cultural Leaders Program seeks to cultivate Broward County’s next generation of cultural leadership by focusing attention on people who have the will and desire to develop cultural leadership skills. The initiative enables young professionals to enhance leadership skills, build relationships with business and community leaders, productively contribute to civic life and cultural development, and gain recognition within causes that stir their passion. For a period of two years, the 15 members immerse themselves in learning all facets of arts leadership. By doing so, this next generation of cultural leaders will be ready to take on the challenges presented by a changing cultural and financial climate. Upon completion, participants then may become eligible to receive recommendations for either board membership with a cultural organization or a recommendation to serve on the Broward Cultural Council..
