Purpose:
City Theatre, founded in 1996, is dedicated to the solicitation, development and production of original works by established and emerging playwrights from throughout the region and nation and brings the nation's best plays to South Florida audiences, as well as produces creative educational programming in South Florida that enlightens, inspires, and entertains. City Theatre continues to expand on our vision for and impact on our community, region, and nation by bringing high quality theatre to audiences of all ages.
 
Projects:
SUMMER SHORTS is an acclaimed annual theatre festival featuring the World and/or Florida premieres of short (one act) comedies, dramas and musicals by well-known and emerging playwrights from Florida and throughout the United States. The summer festival is held each July at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. SUMMER SHORTS is the only theater festival in Florida and one of only a few produced nationwide, devoted to the short form drama. SUMMER SHORTS has gained a reputation for artistic excellence among critics and audiences of all ages


Projects:

SHORTS GONE WILD: A co-production with arts-partner Island City Stage- An original short form play festival performed at Empire Stage in Ft. Lauderdale, featuring commissioned plays written to address issues relevant to the LGBT communities. This award winning program received the 2013 Silver Palm Award for Outstanding LGBT theatrical production.

SUMMER SHORTS:  "America's Short Play Festival" – the acclaimed series of original short form plays at Miami’s state of the art Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. Summer Shorts features an original selection brand new world premier and commissioned works culled from City Theatre’s National Award for Short Playwriting Contest.                                                             

FAMILY PROGRAM SERIES: Annual performances which reaches children, families, and summer campers from ages 6+. Young audiences may engage in their theatrical experience by accessing an online study guide developed for each production.
SHORTS 4 KIDS: "Anti-Bullying & Self-Respect" educational outreach touring program which brings thematic short drama INTO public and private schools, camps, and inner-city community venues.  Shorts 4 Kids provides performances, post-show discussions and interactive study guides.
CITY READS FOR CITYWRIGHTS: Free play readings culled from the company's regional and national play submissions, where community venues transform into our literary living room and audiences are given the opportunity to enjoy readings of original works fresh off the page with South Florida actors.
