I consider it a privilege to represent the residents of District 5 on the Broward County Commission, a job I have been proud to hold since November, 2004. Many of you first met me during my twelve years of service on the School Board of Broward County. I was first elected in 1992 and served three terms as chairperson. My experience on the School Board convinced me that I could bring new ideas and a fresh approach to the County Commission.
Since my election to the Commission one of my main focuses has been on assessing, prioritizing and expanding programs and services for senior citizens and recognizing the importance of utilizing data and technology in our current systems. Earlier this summer I served as the driving force for the Broward County Youth Anti-Violence Summit, which brought community leaders to the Bank Atlantic Center to discuss the troubling issue of youth violence.
I am referred to as the “Process Commissioner”. I know that with good processes, good government will happen. The one process that needs curbing is one that I am working hard to streamline: the bureaucratic process that is often inherent in government. I am committed to making Broward County government more efficient. One area that is of particular interest is the County’s procurement process. Accountability is critical. Utilizing data to make decisions is in the best interest of the residents of Broward County.
In the past I served on a number of boards, councils and committees serving our community. My involvement currently includes membership on the Children’s Services Board, the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the School Oversight Committee. I also serve as the Chair of the Broward County Housing Council that was created by voters in 2008.
Providing for the needs of our elderly population is critical and one of my priorities. To that end, I serve on the Broward Aging Alliance and spearheaded the first Elder Services Summit. The Alliance serves as a coordinated leadership body concerned with matters relating to the well-being and improvement of the quality of life for Broward County’s elder residents.
While I was raised in Dade County, I have been a resident of Broward County for more than 35 years. My husband, Steve, and I are parents of two adult daughters and now have the pleasure of watching our two grandsons grow up in our beautiful community.
I want you to know that I am here to work with you and for you. I understand the role of a policy maker and I believe I have the determination, professionalism and integrity to serve you well. It is critically important to me that the County and the Cities/Towns work together. We can find the common ground necessary to create the partnerships which are beneficial and productive to you, our constituents. As many of you have already discovered my office serves as a resource to all in our community. We provide information to our Home Owner Associations, Condo Associations and Civic Associations and we work to resolve the issues that you bring to our attention.
I strive to be accessible and responsive to your issues and concerns. Your opinions and thoughts are important to me. Please feel free to contact me at anytime by calling 954-357-7005 or by e-mail at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
