Excel users often add formatting to their spreadsheet not only to make it more attractive and easier to read, but it can make it easier for users to find the information they are after. The Format Painter function allows you to quickly copy formatting from one part of a sheet to another or to another sheet in the same workbook. This quick tip will show you how a “sticky” Format Painter will save you time.

This trick will keep the Format Painter active to apply format in multiple locations of the document. This method can apply to all of the Microsoft Office products.

  1. Double-clicking on the Format Painter icon will cause it to stick, so that you can continue to apply the desired format to multiple cells, ranges, columns or worksheets.
  2. To turn off this effect, either press the Esc key or click the Format Painter icon.
