ACCOUNTANT I

NATURE OF WORK

This is professional accounting work in the classification, analysis and reporting of financial data.

Employees of this class analyze financial transactions and prepare financial statements and reports to control and account for county funds and to analyze and project financial data. Work involves the application of governmental accounting principles and techniques to the treatment of transactions and other accounting operations. Supervision may be exercised over technical and clerical assistants. Work is performed within the framework of established policies and procedures, under the direction of a professional superior who provides advice and occasionally checks work in progress or upon completion. Performance also is evaluated through internal control systems.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Maintains and supervises the maintenance of accounting records; conducts standard internal audits of various county revenues and funds and departmental accounting records; ascertains that the distribution of all general journal entries are reasonable and correct; performs special audits as assigned.

Maintains and analyzes fiscal records, audits, and evaluates all receipts; maintains and evaluates all expenditure forms, purchase orders and disbursement orders for compliance with established regulations and policies.

May supervise the posting of accounting data to general ledger accounts from accounting records and documents; makes general journal entries as required; takes balances and prepares financial reports and statements.

Analyzes accounting records and reports and prepares special management budget reports as requested.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices.

Knowledge of a variety of standard accounting and office procedures and equipment, including the application of electronic data processing to the maintenance and analysis of fiscal data.

Ability to apply accounting principles and practices to the maintenance and analysis of fiscal and accounting records.

Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in accounting; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
