AQUATIC COORDINATOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled and supervisory water safety work involved in the operation of county aquatics facility/facilities.

Employees in this class are responsible for safeguarding employees and patrons at county aquatics facilities or when engaged in a county sponsored activity at a public aquatics facility. Work involves responsibility for aquatics staff supervision, administrative tasks, training programs, emergency situation simulation drills, operational maintenance methods, aquatics procedures and programming. Work is reviewed through employee observation, facility inspection, written and oral reports and conferences.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Supervises the work of subordinate personnel engaged in aquatics programming, safety procedures and maintenance services by scheduling and evaluating work activities at the assigned facility/facilities.

Plans and conducts periodic inspections; observes deficiencies in operation, maintenance, safety practices and conditions; issues both verbal and written reports and recommendations to correct deficiencies when necessary.

Reviews and inspects the life saving equipment and supply requirements; approves purchase requisitions for replenishing life saving and first aid supplies and equipment, uniforms and other items needed for the efficient and effective operation of the aquatics program; coordinates records and reports relating to all aquatics activities at assigned facility/facilities.

Supervises and conducts water safety and lifeguard certification training programs for aquatics personnel in water rescue and accident prevention techniques, water safety procedures, first aid and CPR.

Supervises and conducts practice drills simulating emergency situations.

Plans, directs and implements broad and varied aquatics programs of recreational activities, services and special events to meet the needs of the public.

Coordinates the collection of revenues and assists in budget preparation for the assigned aquatics facility/facilities.

Explains and interprets public safety rules and regulations, fees and charges and aquatics operational procedures and programs to park patrons; enforces or refers enforcement to proper authorities.

Coordinates the performance of water management tests to ensure water quality at the assigned aquatics facility/facilities.

Meets with committees, organized groups, individuals or other interested parties to provide information, evaluate program needs, revise or formulate programs, and further public relations for the county.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of approved water rescue and accident prevention techniques, emergency procedures, simulation drills, water safety policies, first aid and CPR.

Knowledge of operational, safety and maintenance requirements for aquatics facilities and amenities; considerable knowledge of water safety practices and procedures.

Knowledge of emergency situation simulation drills for aquatics facilities and amenities.

Knowledge of basic laws, rules and regulations relating to the development and use of aquatics facilities and amenities.

Knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of aquatics facilities management, safety, maintenance, programming and staffing.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, organizational behavior and administration.

Knowledge of water safety and lifeguard certification training, practices and procedures.

Ability to plan, direct and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to administer and manage the operation, maintenance and staffing requirements of aquatics facilities and amenities.

Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the public and to be capable of enforcing regulations firmly and impartially.

Ability to prepare and maintain reports, budgets and conduct special studies.

Ability to plan, coordinate and conduct training programs and emergency situation simulation drills.

Ability to perform assigned tasks requiring physical strength and agility.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Skills in pool and open water swimming, water rescue, accident prevention techniques, water safety procedures, standard first aid, CPR and training.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from a four year college or university with course work in business, public administration, parks and recreation management or related field; experience in the management, supervision and life guarding of aquatics activities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Certification in life saving techniques, water safety instruction, standard first aid and CPR (for adult, child and infant) by a nationally recognized organization. Employment continuation in this class is contingent upon certification/re-certification by a nationally recognized organization approved by Broward County.
