NATURE OF WORK
This is specialized technical work involving dissemination of zoning information and application submittal requirements for various functions to the public. Employees in this class maintain substantial public contact and are also responsible for the intake of zoning-related applications to ensure completeness prior to review.
Work is performed under the supervision of a Senior Zoning Plans Examiner.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Provides zoning information to architects, contractors, attorneys and the public.
Answers inquiries regarding zoning as it relates to proposed site plans and explains site plan submittal requirements.
Advises applicants for certificates of use whether their proposed business is permitted within the zoning district in which they will be located.
Explains submittal procedures for permit, certificate of use and other zoning-related applications.
Responds to phone calls relating to zoning information.
Directs the public to other appropriate County agencies.
Accepts and processes fees for submittal of permits, certificates of use and other zoning related applications.
Performs data of initial permit and certificate of use information.
Records information provided to the public in response to phone calls.
Records and files information relating to certificates of use in division historical records.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some customer service or public relations experience.
Some knowledge of general zoning principles.
Some knowledge of legal descriptions and property identification.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school.
One year's experience in working with zoning or land use codes, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
