SECURITY GUARD II

NATURE OF WORK

This is supervising security work in safeguarding county installations and operations.

Work involves supervising and participating in inspecting of assigned areas, safeguarding county property and operating a county parking lot facility. Work requires independent judgement within established policies and procedures. Work is reviewed through observation of work activities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is distinguished from Security Officer I by the supervisory responsibilities and by the greater experience requirements.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Supervises assigned subordinate security personnel.

Makes assigned rounds of building and facilities to guard against unlawful entry, theft or damage.

Mans and operate a parking lot toll booth.

Collects cash parking fees and operates cash register.

Checks returned tickets against ticket register.

Prepares cash intake sheets and other required reports.

Checks county installations for fire hazards and malfunctions of electrical equipment or sensor alarms.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of security procedures and techniques.

Knowledge of fire protection methods and techniques.

Ability to physically perform assigned security tasks with alertness.

Ability to enforce regulations with firmness and tact.

Ability to prepare reports.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; and experience in security work, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
