PORT EVERGLADES ASSISTANT CRANE ENGINEER

NATURE OF WORK

This is responsible supervisory and administrative work assisting the Port Crane Engineer in the operation and maintenance of the Port-owned gantry cranes.

Work involves assisting in the responsibility for overseeing and coordinating through the crane maintenance contractor all functions relating to gantry cranes including daily operation, scheduling preventive maintenance, and participation in design and construction of new cranes and upgrades of and modifications to existing cranes. Work is performed with considerable independent judgement. Supervision is exercised over a staff of professional and technical subordinates engaged in carrying out assigned responsibilities. Work is reviewed periodically through meetings and written reports.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Assists in designs and implements scheduled maintenance programs for Port-owned gantry cranes, including repairs and modifications.

Confers with and provides guidance and oversight to the crane maintenance contractor to insure work is completed in a professional and timely manner.

Maintains regular inspection of Port-owned gantry cranes to identify potential operational concerns, property damage and general maintenance compliance.

Assists in trouble shooting. Confers with senior management in reporting and making recommendations.

Maintains up-to-date working knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations.

Maintains effective communication in reporting crane hours and damages.

Coordinates the purchasing and inventory control of parts, supplies, and equipment.

Oversees the training of subordinate staff; establishes work week schedule.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of the operation and activities at a major seaport facility.



Thorough knowledge of operation, use and maintenance of seaport rail mounted gantry cranes.

Considerable knowledge of electrical principals and practices, digital controls, electronics and hydraulic systems. Must be able to understand and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics.

Considerable knowledge of the structural engineering and design of seaport gantry cranes.

Knowledge in the design and preventive maintenance of machinery and equipment exposed to a marine environment.

Ability to coordinate and supervise the effective and efficient maintenance of seaport gantry cranes.

Ability to enforce seaport rules, regulations and procedures firmly and impartially.

Ability to react promptly and appropriately in emergency situations.

Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and employees of the crane maintenance contractor, the customers of the Port, general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Completion of three (3) years of college or university level course work in engineering or closely related field; four (4) years of progressively responsible work experience in the industrial mechanical field with at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity; six (6) years of experience in a seaport transportation facility, including four (4) years of supervisory and administrative experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
