NATURE OF WORK
This is technical and analytical work in the operation and maintenance of a data communications network.
Employees in this class are responsible for performing various tasks that are necessary for the operation of data communication equipment and related software. Duties include operating network and diagnostic equipment, troubleshooting communication problems, installing and repairing the various network components. Responsibilities include ensuring that the network communications systems remain operational by reviewing new instructions, providing this information to the support staff, and solving network related problems in a timely manner. Incumbent documents all pertinent information and maintain statistics concerning the performance of data processing equipment in the network. Supervision is received from a technical supervisor who determines job priorities and reviews the work for satisfactory completion of assigned responsibilities.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Operates the network communication equipment, related test devices, and the diagnostic equipment.
Troubleshoots and repairs on-line devices, lines, modems, and other related network components.
Diagnoses network problems through various test methods, notifies supervisor or outside vendor of equipment malfunctions, and plans corrective action.
Coordinates communication requirements between the customer, support staff and outside vendor representatives in a professional manner.
Installs and maintains the on-line communications equipment, terminals, peripherals, and cabling as required.
Assists in establishing troubleshooting and maintenance procedures.
Prepares reports on the network activity and recommends changes to improve the network system's efficiency.
Performs related work as required.

Knowledge of the operating characteristics of data communications equipment.
Knowledge of basic theories of data transmission.
Ability to coordinate and perform the installation and maintenance of communication equipment for mainframes, minis, micros and LAN environments.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; completion of a vocational/trade school certification program in electronics, computer science or related field; two (2) years experience in troubleshooting and repairing the network components in a large mainframe communication environment; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
