NATURE OF WORK
This is manual work in drawbridge operation and in the supervision of bridgetenders in the operation and maintenance of county drawbridges.
Work involves performing related semi-skilled mechanical tasks involved in the operation and maintenance of a bridge and supervisory responsibilities including planning, scheduling and assigning the work of a staff of bridgetenders. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior and is reviewed through conferences, reports and evaluations of operating efficiency.
Maintains watch for water traffic and operates bridge and traffic control devices in response to proper boat signals.
Plans, schedules and assigns the work of a staff of bridgetenders; develops and maintains operating plans to ensure safe and efficient bridge operations.
Inspects mechanical and electrical devices for defects or malfunctions.
Supervises maintenance of bridges.
Maintains bridge lighting by turning bridge lights off and on at proper times and ensuring that burned out lights and fuses are replaced.
Requisitions materials, maintains records; prepares and submits reports.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations controlling the operation of drawbridges spanning navigable waters of the County.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of drawbridges, heavy electrical motors and power driven hoisting machinery and equipment.
Knowledge of Coast Guard regulations.
Knowledge of County administrative policies and procedures pertaining to purchasing and personnel.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep records and to prepare reports.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
Ability to react promptly and correctly in emergency situations.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the use of mechanical tools to maintain and adjust motors and other bridge machinery.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; considerable experience in the operation of drawbridges; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
