MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR II

NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced supervisory and administrative work in the construction, maintenance and repair of county facilities.

Work involves the assignment and review of subordinate supervisors and/or work crews performing varied duties within a major divisional maintenance and construction program. Employees must exercise considerable independent judgment in carrying out work assignments. Work is subject to review by a maintenance superior who offers assistance on unusual or difficult problems and inspects completed jobs for workmanship and compliance with time schedules.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is distinguished from that of Maintenance Supervisor I by the exercise of supervisory responsibility over subordinate supervisors, or over work crews in programs and projects of a large, complex nature which may involve multiple agencies.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

  • Directs the work of subordinate supervisors and/or work crews in public works and utilities maintenance and construction work; supervises construction, maintenance, and repair programs and projects involving large, complex County facilities and systems and/or among multiple agencies.

 

  • Plans, lays out, and assigns projects which have been approved by administrative superiors; directs varied physical plant maintenance, modification and construction in such trades as air conditioning, carpentry, electrical, painting, plastering, plumbing, and general maintenance work.

 

  • Recommends extent and nature of building repairs and improvements; estimates labor and material requirements; checks and approves supply orders; selects equipment to be purchased.

 

  • Supervises maintenance work in a public transit system.

 

  • Requisitions materials; maintains records; prepares and submits reports; recommends budgetary requirements.

 

  • Makes periodic field inspections at work sites; reassigns crews from one job to another, and confers with occupants on work scheduling.

 

  • Works closely with engineering staff to coordinate work projects with inspections and completion schedules.

 

  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Considerable knowledge of maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction procedures and practices.

 

  • Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials of the building and mechanical trades.

 

  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and the local, state and federal rules and regulations applicable to the area of assignment.

 

  • Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of skilled trades workers and to assist them as needed in the proper work methods and procedures.

 

  • Ability to direct and supervise work projects.

 

  • Ability to estimate costs in terms of labor, supplies, and equipment.

 

  • Ability to keep accurate records and to prepare and submit reports.

 

  • Ability to understand and assign work from plans, sketches and construction drawings.

 

  • Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty’s Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

Graduation from high school; four (4) years supervisory experience in maintenance, construction, repair or trades work depending on area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
