LABOR SUPERVISOR I

NATURE OF WORK

This is supervisory work over a group of unskilled or semiskilled laborers performing manual tasks.

Work involves the responsibility of seeing that assigned labor tasks are performed properly and that work schedules are maintained. Detailed assignments are received from a superior and inspected in process and upon completion.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Supervises workers in the maintenance of county buildings, park structures, and equipment; inspects job sites for proper completion of tasks.

Supervises grounds care and laying or removing of underground piping; operates grounds care equipment and makes minor repairs to machines and equipment.

Supervises construction and patch work on roads.

Supervises maintenance workers in the clearing of mosquito control ditches with bush cutters, shovels and in the spraying of mosquito larvae with manual equipment.

Supervises digging of ditches, cutting or right-of-way for dragline operations.

Maintains records related to work assignments.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the standard tools and practices used in general labor work.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards in laboring work and necessary safety precautions.

Ability to assign and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in the proper work methods and procedures.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to keep accurate records.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and

appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; considerable experience in maintenance, construction, or general labor operations depending on area of assignment, including some supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
