ARCHITECT (REGISTERED)

NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced professional structural architectural work in the design and development of buildings and facilities.

Work involves the application of architectural principles and techniques in the planning, design, development, and construction of buildings and facilities. Work also involves the signing and sealing of plans, obtaining permits for construction, and the review of plans and specifications submitted by consultants and contractors. Employees in this classification will be required to furnish technical advice to administrative superiors in the development and negotiation of plans and specifications for building and facilities construction. Assignments are received in the form of specific requirements or general objectives and the employee is expected to carry assignments to completion with considerable independence in accordance with program objectives, professional standards, and policies and procedures. Work is subject to review by an administrative superior for adherence to established norms.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Conducts preliminary field surveys; develops, designs and drafts preliminary plans for buildings and facilities.

Prepares maps, sketches, working drawings and construction plans; prepares cost estimates, specifications and bid proposals for contracts.

Participates in the presentation of plans to governing and permitting authorities for land use, zoning and permit approvals.

Inspects and supervises the inspection of construction projects while in progress and upon completion for adherence to plans and specifications; advises contractors on the interpretation of plans and specifications; approves minor design changes in the course of construction; reviews contractors' requests for payment.

Conducts research and special studies pertaining to buildings and facilities development and maintenance; prepares reports and recommendations for the review of a superior.

May supervise subordinate personnel in preparing plans, specifications and preliminary construction layouts and cost estimates.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of structural architecture.

Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and equipment employed in building and facilities construction and maintenance in the field of structural architecture as related to public buildings and facilities.

Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in architecture; considerable experience in architectural work relevant to the area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Registration as a Professional Architect in the State of Florida.

SPECIAL NOTE

In those instances in which a registered architect signs any document for the County in the performance of his/her regular work, that employee shall be accorded such protection and immunity from any lawsuit as a result of his/her conduct within the scope of his/her employment to the extent provided by law.
