Series VI: Personal papers and memorabilia, 1946-1987 (0.70 linear feet)

This series contains materials about Shaara's life. His journals record his everyday activities, private thoughts about his life, and include comments about his physical and mental health. Shaara also kept extensive notes on contemporary events, literature, and his writings in general. He often used his journals to compose letters that would often be typed later to the correspondent. The archive houses only a few personal effects of Shaara, including his army insignia from the 82nd Airborne Division and his badge, patch, and traffic citation book from the St. Petersburg police force. The folder containing his Curriculum vitae is a useful compendium of factual dates, key documents about his writing, his recollections of teaching at Florida State University, and a bibliographic list of his publications. Within this series are Shaara's student papers from Rutgers University.

Shaara was a precocious student and graduated from high school two years early. Over the next few years, he served on a troop transport with the Merchant Marines, became a paratrooper sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division, and even entertained his fellow soldiers with his cartoons. Following his discharge, Shaara attended Rutgers University and graduated with a B.A. in English in 1951. During this time, he also served on active reserve, became a boxer, wrote advertisements for a Prudential Life Insurance, and married his college sweetheart, Helen Elizabeth Krumwiede. Shaara continued some graduate work at Columbia University, 1952 and University of Vermont, 1953-1954. In order to gain experience for his writing, he had a brief stint as a police officer in St. Petersburg, Florida from 1954-55.

Materials are arranged in five subcategories: Journals, Curriculum vitae, Army, Education, Police, and Medical records. For more information about his personal life and medical conditions, see Series I: Writings; Series II: Art (original cartoons and drawings); Series III: Correspondence - - Personal and family; Series VII: Clippings; Series VIII: Printed matter; Series IX: Serials; Series X: Manuscripts of other individuals; and Series XIII: Photographs.
