October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual event when many national public service organizations, professional medical associations and government agencies work together to promote breast cancer awareness, increase access to services and share information about the disease. For the eighth consecutive year Broward County Libraries Division has received Susan G. Komen for the Cure grant funding. The grant, which is administered by the Broward Public Library Foundation, allows the Libraries Division to offer health programs and information to their customers.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Broward County Libraries will host a series of events to educate and inform the community which range from lectures on nutrition and new advancements; art enrichment; a breast cancer awareness fair; a panel discussion; and a book launch and “Pink Tea.” In addition, all Broward County Library locations will have Susan G. Komen for the Cure materials and informational displays.

October 4 – Noon to 1 p.m.
Nutritionist Michelle J. Stewart presents “Eating Better: Nutrition That Can Help to Prevent Breast Cancer.” A light lunch will be served, Main Library

October 6 - 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Community Health Fair: A Focus on Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Awareness Fair, sponsored by Chi Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Mammovan, information tables on women’s health and breast cancer, giveaways, HIV/AIDS screening, blood pressure/glucose screenings and more, Northwest Regional Library

October 11 - 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

October 11 – 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
“Be Healthy, Be Well, Be Creative” with artist Susan Buzzi. Learn about healthy eating and do a fun craft. Light refreshments will be served. Ages 9 to 12, Main Library

October 15 – Noon to 1 p.m.
Dr. Nicholas Tranakas discusses advancements in breast cancer treatments. Nicholas Tranakas, MD, is the Medical Director of Cancer Services for Broward Health and of the Comprehensive Breast Center at Broward Health Medical Center. A light lunch will be served, Main Library

October 16 – 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Staying “In the Pink,” presented by the Westside Regional Medical Center and Plantation General Hospital. Listen to a panel of experts discuss the importance of breast cancer screening, prevention and early detection, diagnosis and intervention, forms of treatment and clinical trials. Guest Speakers: Evilio Alvarez, MD, Radiology; Brian Weinstein, MD, General Surgery/Breast Surgery; Shashi Kusuma, MD, Breast Reconstructive Surgery; Edward Kaplan, Radiation Oncology Elizabeth Tan-Chiu, Medical Oncology – Breast and Ovarian Cancer. October 16 – 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Book launch and “Pink Tea.” The evening will include film viewings, selected works and a book talk with author Susan Buzzi. Susan marks five years of profiling the breast cancer journey with the release of her book I Am A Strong Woman. This poignant collection of photographs along with personal stories features breast cancer survivors and their families and celebrates extraordinary courage, inspiration and hope, Main Library

October 17 – 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Alternative resources on coping with cancer discussion. Light refreshments, West Regional Library

November 6 – 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Westside Medical Center presents a Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar, West Regional Library

November 10 – 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
 “Through the Lens of a Warrior.” Susan Buzzi speaks about her experience of photographing and interviewing breast cancer survivors. Stories to Share Part IV photography exhibit on display in the Gallery through November 30., North Regional/Broward College Library
