Free StoryBook Festival at Southwest Regional Library Brings Folk Tales to Life

Come hear folk tales and music from around the world at the StoryBook Festival, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Southwest Regional Library, located at 16835 Sheridan St., Pembroke Pines, FL 33331. This free festival offers a day of music, dance, storybook characters, crafts, stories and activities for youngsters and their families. Listen to renowned storytellers as they tell tales passed down from generations at the event and see and hear music and dance from Africa, China, Hawaii, Jamaica, Japan and South America.

The festival features live children’s performances on three stages as well as an arts and crafts tent where kids can get creative. Roam the Miami Herald’s Fantasy Forest, a magical place where children can interact with their favorite storybook characters. Hear stories by “celebrity reader” Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis. Enjoy the new “Swappin’ Ground” area where children may tell their own stories. Food trucks will be on site, selling tasty treats during lunch hours. Check out the latest downloadable books and new technology in the Overdrive Digital Bookmobile. The first 1,000 children at the festival will receive a free book, courtesy of the Baptist Medical Plazas’ Big Book Giveaway. Children are encouraged to come to the festival in costume, and join the StoryBook Parade at 11 a.m., and parents will want to bring cameras for the StoryBook Photo Spots.

Featured performances include:

  • Folk tales by Michael Parent, Carrie Sue Ayvar, Janie DeVos, Baba Lyons
  • Superstar Productions’ Hansel & Gretel
