2012 Black History Month Essay Contest

Fabulous Forties on the Avenue

Broward County African-American Research Library and Cultural Center

January 2 - February 15, 2012

The contest is open to students living in Broward County, in grades 4-12. Interested students are encouraged to write and submit an essay on The Changing Era for African Americans in the United States and Abroad in the 1940s. Your essay should address the impact this change had on the lives of African Americans living in the 1940s.

 Criteria for Entry
 
To participate in the contest, essays should be legibly written, with good grammar and correct spelling. Essays should be an original writing and:

  • Be 200 words or less.
  • Be legible in either handwritten format or typed. (No cursive writing.)
  • Be accompanied by this Essay Contest Official Entry Form.
  • Be submitted no later than 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33311.

Students must provide their full name, home address, telephone number, school of attendance, and grade level. Students may only submit one entry.

Forms can also be obtained in person at the AARLCC (from the Youth Services Desk).

Essays will be judged for merit, originality, grammar, and spelling. There will be one winner from each of three categories: Grades 4-6, Grades 7-9, and Grades 10-12. Best Buy® is sponsoring prizes, including a digital camera, an MP3 player and a laptop computer.

The contest is open to students in Broward County. All entries must be submitted by 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2012.


How to Win

Winning entries will be determined by a panel of judges from the Broward County African-American Research Library and Cultural Center based on merit, originality, grammar and spelling. All entries must be submitted to the Broward County African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, Youth Services Section by 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Prizes will be awarded after the end of the contest period at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center.

Limitations/Disqualification

In the event that Broward County African-American Research Library and Cultural Center is unable to contact any of the winners by 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, another winner will be selected from all remaining eligible entry forms. Best Buy® or Broward County Library is not responsible for any incomplete or illegible entry forms.

Publicity/Release

By participating, all participants and winner(s) grant Broward County Library exclusive permission to use their names, characters, photographs, voices, and likenesses in connection with promotion of this and other contests and waive any claims to royalty, right or remuneration for such use.

Prize Delivery

The prizes will be awarded in person at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center on/or after February 22, 2012. Winners must show a valid ID such as a school photo identification card.
