Vintage map of Jamaica.In August, Jamaica (Aug. 6) and Trinidad and Tobago (Aug. 31) will respectively celebrate 50 years of independence from Great Britain, and the Caribbean will be rocking with festivals and fun. For Jamaicans, that includes a gala parade in downtown Kingston, local street parties and flag-raising ceremonies. Meanwhile, those in the nation of Trinidad and Tobago will celebrate with military-style parades, music and a fireworks finale.

For the rest of us, the anniversary of 50 years of Caribbean independence is the perfect time to brush up on fun facts about the island nations – with a little help from Broward County Library’s extensive online resources! See for Yourself: Caribbean History at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center

The Special Collections of the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) houses a number of collections that feature art, ephemera and more from Jamaica and the Caribbean. The Frederic Gomes Cassidy Collection features books on the history and culture of the Caribbean islands with a strong emphasis on Jamaica. The Library of the Spoken Word provides 300 recordings of lectures, oral histories, stories and documentaries of Caribbean culture and history produced by the University of the West Indies. Additionally, AARLCC’s Special Collection also features an extensive selection of periodicals, newspapers and microfilm with Caribbean publications such as Caribbean Quarterly. The Special Collections are open to viewing by the public; please call 954-357-6217 for information or to make appointments.

Also, don’t miss the Pieces of Jamaica art reception and book launch for photographer/artist David Muir, scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29 at Southwest Regional Library. Pieces of Jamaica is a collection of photos that captures the candid beauty of the island of Jamaica as captured by Muir, a South Florida-based photographer. David's collection consists of photographs depicting moments of authentic Jamaican culture and rustic reality, along with true beauty in things others might consider mundane.
