Intermodal Container Transfer Facility Program
Story 1
A near-dock Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) will be constructed in Southport as a public/private partnership with the Florida East Coast Railway. It will be utilized to transfer international intermodal containers between cargo ships and rail. Currently, containers must be drayed between Port Everglades and off-port rail terminals located in Fort Lauderdale on Andrews Avenue or in the city of Hialeah, which is in Miami-Dade County.
The ICTF project will bring two new rail tracks under the Florida Department of Transportation Eller Drive Overpass. Construction on the overpass began during the summer of 2011. These new rail tracks expand into six working tracks totaling approximately 18,000 LF, which will accommodate a train up to 9,000-LF. The total ICTF area is approximately 42.5 acres, and includes a marshaling area.
