Keep an Eye on Your Garbage and Recycling Carts!

Broward County provides garbage and recycling carts to all homes in the Broward Municipal Services District (BMSD) free of charge. However, it is important to understand that the carts are the property of Broward County, and it is a violation to alter, damage, or remove them from the address they have been assigned to. If you are a homeowner in the BMSD, you are responsible for making sure your carts are kept in good condition and remain with your residence at all times. Carts that are damaged due to neglect or missing from the property may be assessed a replacement fee.

What if I move?

If you move to a new address, the carts should remain at the original property and be stored in a secure place, ready for use by the new occupant. Each cart is fitted with a chip that shows which address the cart is registered to, and Broward County or the waste hauler may confiscate carts found at locations that do not match their registered address.

What if I rent out my home?

If you rent out your property, make sure your tenants are aware that the cart must remain with the property at all times by including it in your leasing agreement. Should the cart be removed or damaged, the replacement cost will be the responsibility of the homeowner.

What if my cart is stolen or damaged?

If your cart is stolen from your property, you must file a report with BSO and submit the report to Broward County’s Solid Waste and Recycling Services (SWRS) to get a free replacement cart. Carts that are damaged through the collection process should be reported to SWRS for further inquiry.

Can I request additional carts?

  • Additional carts are available for a fee of $5 per month for each cart you request.
  • Residents of BMSD may order carts online by completing the request form, or by calling us at 954-765-4999.
  • Residents from all other Broward County municipalities please contact your city for more information.
