Keep Your Pet Cool

When it comes to heat-related cat and dog deaths, Florida ranks second. Don't forget your pet when South Florida is experiencing extremely hot weather. Help your pet beat the heat by following these tips:

• Keep your pet hydrated by maintaining access to fresh, cool water
• Bring your pet inside or limit your pet's outdoor activity to cooler times of the day
• If outside, make sure your pet has access to comfortable shade
• Never leave your pet unattended in the car; it is illegal under Florida Law
• Keep paws off hot asphalt and pavement
• Trim hair, but do not shave your pet entirely to avoid sunburn
• Don't allow pets to overexert themselves - introduce rest breaks into playtime to allow pets to cool down

It's also important to know the signs of overheating which include:

• Excessive panting and shortness of breath
• Excessive drooling
• Elevated body temperature over 104°F
• Increased pulse and respiratory rate
• Vomiting
• Discolored gums

Contact your vet immediately if a pet exhibits any of these symptoms.
