Broward County Central Examining Boards
The Broward County Contractor Licensing and Enforcement are mandated by the Broward County Charter and Chapter 9 of the Broward County Code of Ordinances, to provide for the issuance of Certificates of Competency to over 14,000 trades people to contract with individuals for construction projects throughout Broward County (all unincorporated and incorporated areas).
There are six boards each of which are overseen by the Contractor Licensing and Enforcement section:
Board of Electrical and Specialty Electrical Contractors
Board of Plumbing and LPG Contractors
Board of General and Specialty Building Contractors
Board of Mechanical and Specialty Mechanical (including air conditioning) Contractors
Board of Engineering and Specialty Engineering Contractors
Each Board is comprised of six members, three from the League of Cities and three appointed by the County Commission, all who provide their time as a volunteer. Each Board is required to meet a minimum of eight times year where they review applications, hear complaints and hold disciplinary hearings.
The Boards also create sub-contractor categories, i.e., tile, painting, masonry, roofing, pools, etc., that can contract to perform construction work.
In addition to the issuance of Certificates of Competency, the Contractor Licensing and Enforcement administers a Licensed Contractor Program and an Unlicensed Contractor Program. Both of these programs entail receipt and fielding of complaints, investigations, compilation of case files, disciplinary proceedings, fines and mediation.
