New County Wage Recovery Ordinance Takes Effect

Broward County Ordinance 2012-32, relating to Wage Recovery, took effect Wednesday, January 2, 2013. The ordinance provides a way for employees of any business or organization in Broward County (except those exempted by the Ordinance, including the Federal Government, the State of Florida and Indian Tribes) to file a complaint and receive an administrative hearing for nonpayment of earned wages. County employers must post a Notice to Employees regarding wage recovery in locations where important employee information is posted or disseminated. More...

Go SOLAR Online Permitting System is Now Live

A permitting process that used to take weeks is now reduced to a few online clicks, thanks to Go SOLAR online permitting, a streamlined system with standardized fees and pre-approved designs that utilize uniform connectivity to utility systems. It’s all part of the Broward County Go SOLAR Rooftop Solar Challenge – a U.S. Department of Energy grant-funded initiative that makes it easier for residents and businesses to convert to solar energy. Celebrate Black History Month Throughout February

Students in grades 4-12 are encouraged to enter the Black History Month contest at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center. Prizes will be awarded to three lucky winners who address questions on the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington – where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. In February, Broward County Libraries will host activities, lectures, films and children’s activities – all of them free and open to the public commemorating Black History Month. Webcam Shows South Runway Construction

A webcam is now available at fll.net to view the construction progress of the expanded South Runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. There are three cameras with different views of the future 8,000-foot elevated runway. Images are refreshed every 15 minutes. More...

Broward Commissioners invite the public to voice their opinions on a proposed ordinance that would place restrictions on the tethering of dogs in Broward County. “How to Do Business with Broward County” Series is Underway

Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development and the Broward County Purchasing Division will host “How to Do Business with Broward County,” a series of informational workshops designed to assist local entrepreneurs in accessing County procurement opportunities.

The workshops will be held on varying days and times during the third week of every month at multiple locations around the County. Port Everglades Ranked Top Exporting Foreign Trade Zone

Port Everglades has been ranked the top exporting Foreign-Trade Zone in the country for warehousing and distribution activity in 2011. Data show that Port Everglades’ Foreign-Trade Zone No. 25 (FTZ) experienced a 68 percent increase in imports during 2011 while exports increased by 66 percent. Senior Walking Program at Parks

Broward County Parks and Recreation Division and Health Foundation of South Florida launched a new Walk With Ease program for residents 55 and up at 20 different park sites to encourage older adults to start walking for their health. Sun Trolley Offers New Service To/From Airport

For passengers with lengthy waits at the Airport, such as those returning from cruise ship vacations, the Sun Trolley service operated by the Downtown Fort Lauderdale Transportation Management Authority, now offers a route between the Airport and their Welcome Center at the Fort Lauderdale History Center, near area attractions and Las Olas Boulevard. Transportation is free to and from the Airport, and once at the Fort Lauderdale History Center, patrons can choose to purchase an excursion package(s) which include entrance to area museums, Trolley, discount coupons and the Water Taxi.
