Two County Budget Workshops Scheduled for May

The Board of County Commissioners has scheduled two budget workshops on the County’s Fiscal Year budget for 2010, to be held in Room 430 of the Broward County Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale:

• Tuesday, May 19, 1-5 p.m.
• Thursday, May 28, 2-5 p.m.

The deadline for the submission of the County Administrator’s recommended budget to the Board of County Commissioners is July 15. There will be a final Commission Budget Workshop in August prior to the September public hearings.

Budget public hearings and workshops will be televised on participating cable channels and Webcast live on www.broward.org.

Development and Environmental Regulation Division Has Moved to
Government Center West

The following services of the Broward County Development and Environmental Regulation Division have relocated from the downtown Governmental Center Annex to Government Center West, 1 N. University Drive, Room 102, Plantation:

• Environmental Reviews Required for Building Permits
• Environmental License Application Submittal Payments
• Development Review for Building Permits
• Impact/Concurrency Fee Payments
• Plat Related Submissions

“March on Hunger” Food Drive Delivers Nearly Two Tons of Food

Throughout March, Broward County sponsored the “March on Hunger” Food Drive. Collection boxes were set up in County government buildings, libraries, courthouses and other facilities. Broward County employees, residents, cities and businesses were invited to participate.

Nearly two tons of food, 3,800 pounds, was collected and distributed to the Cooperative Feeding Program and Daily Bread Food Bank. All of the food was distributed in Broward County.

Participating cities were Margate, 350 pounds; Weston, 100 pounds; Lauderdale Lakes, 50 pounds; Wilton Manors, 37 pounds; and West Park, results not available. Several businesses held their own food drives, including Falcon Aerospace in Davie, where employees collected 370 pounds of food.

Broward County Transit Schedules Three Community Forums

Broward County Transit is partnering with cities throughout the County to host transit community forums that will allow attendees to voice their concerns, ideas and recommendations for a future public transportation plan. Three forums in May are:

Thursday, May 7, 6-8 p.m.
Parkland Library, 6620 University Drive (adjacent to City Hall), Parkland;

Wednesday, May 13, 6-8 p.m.
Miramar Branch Library, 2050 Civic Center Place, Mira mar; and

Thursday, May 14, 6-8 p.m.

New Environmental Monitoring Laboratory Opening is May 20

Broward County will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, for its new 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Environmental Monitoring Laboratory located on the campus of the University of Florida, 3211 College Ave., Davie.

The laboratory will also be Broward County’s second Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building – a voluntary national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings that emphasize five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality.

Features of the new facility include: a comprehensive security system with intercom access, proximity cards, cameras and security alarm; impact resistant glass windows rated at 145 miles per hour; fire sprinkler system and fire alarms; lightning protection; two mechanical mezzanines; on-site storm water retention and treatment; and specialized waste piping with a pH neutralization tank.

Four County Schools Get Assistance with Landscape Designs

Four Broward County middle schools -- with support from their feeder elementary schools -- will hold open house events to showcase new Florida-friendly gardens they created on each school’s property. The open house events are free and open to the public. For times and locations of the open house events, click here.

Silver Lakes, Lyons Creek, Driftwood and Pioneer middle schools participated in the intensive landscape ecology/water resources program, which was sponsored by Broward County Natural Resources Planning and Management Division, Broward Public Schools and the South Florida Water Management District. The program included classroom lessons on water resource issues, workshops on environmentally-friendly gardening, and the installation of community learning gardens on each school’s property.

In addition to tours of the students’ newly-created gardens, there will be presentations by landscape architects; exhibits offering tips on native landscaping and water conservation; plantings by students, and a native tree/plant giveaway for residents.

“Meet the Agencies” Small Business Workshop Series Continues May 20

The Office of Equal Opportunity Small Business Development Division’s “Meet the Agencies” free workshop series continues on May 20 featuring the Aviation Department business division, focusing on airport concessions. The workshops are designed to provide small business owners with an insider’s look at how Broward County agencies operate and how they work to provide opportunities in County procurement.

Workshops will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on various dates throughout the year at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Port Everglades is Developing New Containerized Cargo Terminal

Port Everglades recently broke ground for a new 41-acre marine terminal for containerized cargo. The Phase VIIA and VIII terminal yard at the southernmost end of Port Everglades is expected to be completed by spring 2010.

Approximately 227 construction jobs will be supported through the Southport Phase VIIA and VIII project. Once completed, preliminary estimates show that approximately 250 direct jobs and more than 14,000 total jobs will be supported by the new cargo terminal, resulting in more than $494 million in personal income. Business activity is projected to reach $1.4 billion annually, with more than $45 million generated in state and local taxes.

The cost of construction for the cargo terminals will be $12.3 million, including contingencies. Florida state grants are funding almost half of the project.

Property Tax Exemption Filing Dates Announced for May 2009

The Broward County Property Appraisers Office is hosting community outreach events during May throughout the county to assist residents with property tax exemption applications and answer questions on property taxes. The Executive Service Corps (ESC) of Broward County is seeking volunteers who have a desire to serve and strengthen the communities of Broward County through volunteering. ESC is the area’s leading pro bono management consulting firm for area nonprofit organizations. Show U Know 2009 Volunteers Needed

In an effort to increase HIV awareness, the RCP Movement and its community partners, including Broward County Human Services Department, Health Care Services Section, have collaborated to plan the first ever Tri-County HIV Awareness and Testing Initiative. The event, titled “Show U Know,” as part of National HIV Testing Day, will be held Saturday, June 27, at Mills Pond Park in Fort Lauderdale.
