Port Everglades Opens To Public For Waterside View Of Oasis On November 27

Oasis of the SeasPort Everglades invites Broward residents to come and see Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, on Friday, November 27, from noon to 4 p.m. The ship is not open for public tours; however there will be unobstructed waterside views with an opportunity for taking photographs. Central Broward Regional Park to Host U.S. Cricket Open

Central Broward Regional ParkBroward County’s Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill will be the site of the first U.S. Cricket Open, scheduled for Friday, December 4 through Sunday, December 6. The park’s cricket stadium is the only facility in the United States certified by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The stadium features a circular, lighted main event field with 5,000 covered seats and additional seating for 15,000 spectators possible. More than four dozen cricket teams have competed throughout the year to qualify for the final field of eight teams that will participate in the event. Get Game at Fern Forest

Fern Forest Nature Center wants you to get game – as in chess, backgammon, and checkers, to name just a few. We Have the Place, You Have the Game! invites you to bring your favorite board game(s) to the park’s picnic shelter and make new friends with similar interests. The program is held from 2 to 4 p.m. the last Sunday of the month through May 2010 and is suitable for all ages. The next program date is Sunday, November 29. Please note, however, that the facility is not appropriate for playing cards or dominoes. For further information, call the nature center at 954-970-0150. The Florida Master Gardeners of Broward County will hold diagnostic clinics and educational programs at the Home Design and Remodeling Show, from Friday, November 20 through Sunday, November 22 at the Broward County Convention Center. Master Gardeners will talk about converting to Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ and distributing the latest information on hurricane-resistant native plants. On the show’s main stage, Dr. John Pipoly, Urban Horticulture Extension Agent and Master Gardener Coordinator, will host two seminars speaking on “Florida-Friendly Shrubs for Perimeter Plantings” and “Saving Money and Conserving Resources Through Sustainable, Florida-Friendly Landscaping™. More…

Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Collection

Broward County residents will have the opportunity to drop off household hazardous waste and electronics for one day only on Saturday, December 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ann Kolb Nature Center in Hollywood. Among the many items that will be accepted at the collection are paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, auto fluids, fluorescent tubes and bulbs and much more. Owl ProwlLearn about the many owls that call Florida home at Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center’s Owl Prowl on Friday, December 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This family-friendly program is for residents of all ages. After the lecture, attendees will be treated to a walk through the woods to try to locate a few of the nature center’s resident owls. Cost for the program is $6 and preregistration is required. Learn While You Lunch at Lecture Series Continues

Discover our human past underneath the surfaces of our oceans, lakes, and other waterways during the second installment of the Lunch-and-Learn Nature Series at the Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park in Hollywood on Friday, December 4, from noon to 2 p.m. The lecture, “Invasive Wildlife Threatening the Florida Everglades,” will be presented by Michael Rochford of the University of Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. Shred Your Identity Theft Worries Away

In their ongoing commitment to help residents fight identity theft, the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the Office of the Florida Attorney General will hold their final free Shred-A-Thon for 2009 in Cooper City.

Nature Center Offer Program for All Ages

Fern Forest Nature Center in Coconut Creek presents its second Sunday Afternoon Nature Lecture Series “Amphibians and Reptiles” on Sunday, November 22. Live animals will participate in the one-hour demonstration, although there will be no handling of the animals by the public. All Aboard the Tradewinds & Atlantic Railroad

Tradewinds & Atlantic RailroadTradewinds Park in Coconut Creek now offers model steam train rides year round, the third weekend of each month, weather permitting, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Upcoming rides are November 21 and 22 and December 19 and 20. The Tradewinds & Atlantic Railroad (TARR) has been offering the rides on one-eighth-life-size trains for one weekend per month since 1990, but not in November or December. Now park visitors can enjoy the rides every month. This attraction is for all ages, but children age 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. The fee is $1 per person per ride. Holiday Fantasy of LightsTradewinds Park will again be a fantasy of color, lights and design this holiday season. The Holiday Fantasy of Lights, Broward County’s spectacular drive through holiday lighting event is back for another year starting Wednesday, November 25 through Saturday, January 2, 2010. The 15th edition of the Holiday Fantasy of Lights, with three miles of giant animated-holiday displays and illuminated trees, is larger than ever blending the favorites of the past and the excitement of new creations. The Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development has scheduled a public meeting to gather input on the New Targeted Industries Study on Thursday, December 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Broward County Convention Center, 1950 Eisenhower Blvd., Fort Lauderdale.
