LOCATION:  The Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital,
3000 Sportsplex Drive in Coral Springs
Come and enjoy a hand-on adventure exploring our natural environment and the creatures that inhabit it. The Sawgrass Nature Center welcomes Nature Explorers from ages 3-5 to our new preschool program.  Cost: $5 for SNC members ($8 for non-members) per class. Pre-registration is required.

TOGETHER GREEN EVENT
LOCATION:  Hugh Taylor Birch State Park in Fort Lauderdale
Saving the environment starts with service.  Join us for our TogetherGreen volunteer event at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park.  The activity will be tree planting.  There will also be a water conservation workshop and rain barrel eco-art painting.  Our partner will be the Kids Ecology Corps who will help lead the tree planting.

The City of Wilton Manors is presenting a series of monthly lectures on the second Wednesday of each month. The first program of the season will be a walking tour of the Richardson Historical Property with Robert Haehle, landscape consultant and co-author of Native Florida Plants.  This tour will begin at 6:00 pm at the Richardson Historical Park and Nature Preserve, 1937 Wilton Drive. Help us release tens of thousands of ladybugs into the Museum’s backyard garden. Stop by and find out what these spotted beetles are all about! Learn about ladybug myths and folklore and how they grow and survive in the wild. Then grab a handful (or more) of ladybugs and set them free! *Note: There are plenty of ladybugs for everyone. This new county employee workshop focuses on the County’s GO Green initiatives; participants will learn how to implement green initiatives both in the home and the workplace.  This workshop, featuring presentations and interactive activities, will engage participants in environmental topics ranging from protection of important natural resources and air quality, energy conservation and mitigating our urban footprint.

Times vary HABITAT STEWARD TRAINING FOR BROWARD COUNTY RESIDENTS
LOCATION:  Various locations in Broward County.
Habitat Steward Volunteers are individuals with a keen interest in the environment, and a willingness to volunteer their time and expertise to help others create or restore wildlife habitat. Habitat Stewards need to be able to commit to providing 30 hours of service to the National Wildlife Federation within a year of completing their training. Examples of some volunteer opportunities include:
• Consulting with neighbors about filling habitat needs in their backyard
• Speaking at civic association meetings or clubs about the importance of wildlife habitat
• Writing articles for local newspapers or magazines
• Distributing habitat information at local festivals
• Helping create Schoolyard Habitats
• Certifying either 3 homes or 1 school, business, or place of worship
Habitat Steward Training includes field trips, expert speakers, and materials. Applicants must attend entire training. Class size is limited. This training is provided at no charge by NatureScape Broward. Volunteer commitment is required.

Lloyd, Ph.D., Senior Research Ecologist at Ecostudies Institute has agreed to be our guest speaker at the January 21, 2010 meeting of the South Florida Audubon Society.  He is also the director of the Mountain Birdwatch program at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies.  Dr. Lloyd is working on several studies including the effects of habitat management on plants and animals in alpine forests of the southeastern United States and the habitat needs of birds in Florida's mangrove forests. Join us for the Broward County Natural Resources Planning and Management Division’s 8th annual environmental outreach event featuring exhibitors, booths, food, entertainment and many other activities.  All attendees will have to opportunity to receive free native trees and plants. Park admission of $1.50/person applies.
Children under 5 are free.

NatureScape Task Force

The NatureScape Task Force is composed of a group of Broward County citizens representing business, education, government, and the environmental community. They meet quarterly, under the guidance of Commissioner Kristin Jacobs to discuss progress and offer direction for the NatureScape Broward Program. Meetings are open to the public.
