JULY 2009

Oohing and Ahhing
Looking for a prime spot for enjoying the Fourth of July fireworks? Look no further than Vista View Park in Davie. Last year more than 1,100 people did just that, taking advantage of the hilly park’s status as one of the highest elevations in South Florida. This year Fireworks Viewing will be offered from 6 to 11 p.m., and dependent on weather conditions, visitors may be able to see the displays from Davie, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Sunrise, and possibly even Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. Most of these shows are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m., but you’re welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets and come early to get a good spot – the park opens at 8 a.m., and the entry fee is good for admission all day, although wrist bands must be worn for reentry. Food and nonalcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis, and no fireworks (including sparklers), grilling, or horses will be permitted in the park for this special event.

Fourth of July Hours

Since Independence Day falls on a Saturday this year, the official holiday weekend for Broward County begins on Friday. All Broward County regional parks will be open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the parks' regular weekend and holiday gate entrance fee of $1.50 per person (children 5 and under free) will be in effect throughout the three-day weekend. Fern Forest and Secret Woods nature centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday; and Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. throughout the weekend. Neighborhood parks will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but the parks will not be staffed and buildings will be closed. Deerfield Island Park will be closed on Friday, July 3, and will resume normal hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the rest of the weekend.

July Is Parks and Recreation Month!

So says Florida Governor Charlie Crist, who on June 17 signed a proclamation continuing an initiative started 24 years ago when the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) declared that July Is Parks and Recreation Month. According to the proclamation, “Florida recognizes the benefits derived from quality public and private recreation and park resources at the local and state level.”

Among the health benefits associated with parks, as cited by the NRPA on its Website:

• Active users of public parks have a lower body mass index.

• People who visit parks for longer periods of time (one hour or more) have significantly lower systolic blood pressures.

• Park users who are more physically active and who make frequent contact with friends during their leisure are less likely to report feeling depressed.

• Citizens who have better access to parks, visit parks more frequently, and engage in physically active park behaviors also make fewer visits to their doctors.

In other words, “It Starts in Parks!” Get out and enjoy.

Keep Your Critters Cool
Summertime, and the living is easy, right? Just because you’re enjoying sun and surf, however, don’t neglect your pet’s summer needs. Did you know, for instance, that July 5 is the busiest day for animal shelters? That’s because many pet owners don’t take precautions to prevent Independence Day stress. The fireworks you and friends and family find exciting may provoke confusion and exhaustion in your pet. Dogs, especially, are sometimes upset enough to crash through windows, jump fences, or break chains to escape.

If loud noises disturb your pet – its reactions to thunderstorms should provide a clue – consider leaving the animal behind while you go out for Fourth of July festivities. At home, have someone remain inside with your pet while fireworks go off outside. Your vet may provide tranquilizers for particularly sensitive animals.

Another summer hazard, especially in subtropical South Florida, is heat stress. Never take a pet with you in the car if it will be unattended for any length of time. An outdoor temperature of 85 degrees can translate to an interior temperature of 120 degrees in just 30 minutes.

Even at home, supply drinking water and shade if your pet is to be left outside on hot days. And if you “strut your mutt” in one of our parks, remember that early morning and after sundown are easier on the heat-sensitive pads of your dog’s paws.

We’re Winners! – Part Two
Awards season continues, with the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division as a beneficiary. In addition to our recent wins from the National Association of Park and Recreation Officials (NACPRO) and the National Association of County Information Officers (NACIO), the Division’s Extension Education Section has now won a National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award. The award is for Extension Education’s volunteer program, the Mobile Extension Office Networks With Local Master Gardener Coordinators.

The Division has also picked up awards from two annual special issues of local publications. In the “Best of” issue of New Times Broward • Palm Beach, three parks were honored: Barkham at Markham for Best Dog Park, Fern Forest Nature Center for Best Nature Trail, and Ski Rixen at Quiet Waters for Best Place To Get Wet. And South Florida Parenting’s Kids Crown Awards issue singles out C.B. Smith Park’s Paradise Cove (Best Water Park for Any Age), Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center (Best Nature Encounters and Preschool Nature Programs), Plantation Heritage Park (Best Park Playground for Kids), and T.Y. Park (Best “Old” Park That’s Like Brand New). Congratulations to all!

Learn More About Some of South Florida’s Most Endangered Species

The Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park presents its popular long-running summer program Sea Turtles and Their Babies at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, beginning on Wednesday, July 8, and running through Friday, September 4.

This educational series covers a variety of topics related to the beleaguered sea turtles and their plight. Following an hourlong slide presentation and lecture, participants will accompany a naturalist on a hatchling release to see what these tiny creatures face during their first crucial minutes of life. Participants will also learn to identify the species of sea turtles found in South Florida, their habitat, breeding and nesting, identification of crawls and nests, conservation efforts, past exploitation, and current management problems now facing sea turtles.

Reservations are required – no walk-ins are accepted, and the program is limited to 50 participants. The program is also subject to change or cancellation if weather conditions are not favorable.

You’ll learn the “How-To Formula” for a safe and enjoyable experience at a dog park, including information on a variety of topics: your body language and how it affects your dog; the proper introduction to a group setting; aggression and dog fights; overheating; your dog’s health; and more.

Classes, each of which includes a lecture followed by a question-and-answer session, will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, July 8, September 16, and November 18 at Fern Forest Nature Center; and on Thursdays, August 20 and October 14 at the Anne Kolb Nature Center. “It’s Fun, Free, and Healthy To Be Drug-Free”

That’s the theme of this year’s Drug Prevention and Awareness Week and Education for Leisure. The program, coordinated through the Parks and Recreation Division’s Special Populations Section, is for registered participants in the Division’s  Summer Recreation Program. Various activities educate youth on the dangers of drug use, as well as focus on life skills: communication, decision making, peer resistance, personal responsibility, self-awareness, self-esteem, and leisure education. Focusing on these life skills will assist youth to be better prepared and educated to make independent and healthy choices. The program runs the week of Monday, July 6 through Friday, July 10.
