Parents Pick Quiet Waters as Best Playground or Park in South Florida
- Nickelodeon Website singles out four Broward County Parks -
WHAT: Between May 5 and July 15 of this year, parents from all over the country voted for their favorite local family-friendly places in the Parents’ Picks Awards 2009, sponsored by Nickelodeon’s ParentsConnect.com Website. In the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market – essentially, the tricounty area of South Florida – Quiet Waters Park was named Best Playground or Park, described on the site as “Your kid’s favorite spot to swing, slide, and get sand in his shoes (and pants and hair and ears)…” Quiet Waters beat out such contenders as South Miami’s Dante Fascell Park, Key Biscayne’s Crandon Park Beach & Family Amusement Center, and Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park. Also among the six runners-up: Broward’s own C.B. Smith, Markham, and T.Y. parks.
Water is the focus at 431.4-acre Quiet Waters Park, which includes a lake for cable water-skiing, a variety of boats for rental, and Splash Adventure, an interactive children’s water playground that’s open seasonally. Fishing is permitted on the shores of the park’s several lakes (licenses required for ages 16 and up), except in the skiing areas.
The park also has a campground that includes 25 Rent-A-Tent sites, which provide pre-setup tents, each with water, electricity, a grill, a fire ring, and a picnic table; restrooms and showers are nearby. There are also two tepee sites, and primitive group camping is also available. (There is no RV camping at this park.)
Rental picnic shelters include five medium (41-60 capacity) and two small shelters (20-40), all with grills, water, and tables. Additional tables and grills are available for picnicking throughout the park. There’s also a corporate shelter area that can accommodate groups of up to 400; the site includes two large grills, tables, electricity, restrooms, two volleyball courts, a horseshoe pit, and a small playground.
For recreation on dry land, Quiet Waters offers a large ADA-accessible playground, a biking/jogging trail, a skate park, and a mountain bike trail, as well as a snack bar. The park has an entrance fee of $1.50 per person (children 5 and under free) on weekends and designated holidays.
