Scheduled Maintenance For FLL Runways

FLL’s two runways are scheduled for routine maintenance from February 3-8, 2025. This activity will result in the intermittent overnight closure of the North and South Runways, impacting one runway at a time.

The runway closure schedule is as follows:

  • The North Runway (10L-28R) will close Monday, February 3, to Wednesday, February 5, from 12:01AM to 5:30AM daily.
  • The South Runway (10R-28L) will close Wednesday, February 5, to Saturday, February 8, from 10:30PM to 5:30AM daily.

All aircraft operations will use the remaining open runway during the nightly closures. We apologize for any inconvenience this activity may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding.

North Runway Post-Flooding Update No. 6

The Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) is scheduling repair work on the Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) bed on the east end of FLL's North Runway (10L-28R) beginning January 14, 2025. This overnight work, which will continue through April 28, 2025, will include replacing all the safety blocks (4,000-plus) in this eastern EMAS bed system, which sustained significant damage during the historic flooding of April 2023.

EMAS beds are critical safety components installed by airports and mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration to help slow or stop an aircraft that overruns the runway. During this period, other runway updates and routine maintenance include repainting the EMAS bed and runway surface and installing new approach lights.

While a portion of the North Runway will be operational during the EMAS replacement work, the South Runway (10R-28L) will remain available for all aircraft operations, as needed. As such, residents located south and west of FLL may experience increased aircraft operations related to the increased use of the South Runway.

The schedules for the North Runway repair and maintenance activities are:

  • EMAS Repair: Tuesday, January 14, from 7AM to Monday, April 28, at 11:59PM (repair work will be continuous).

  • Overnight Painting/Maintenance: Monday, January 20 to Thursday, January 23, from 12:01AM to 5:30AM. All arriving and departing flights will use the South Runway during this closure period.

We apologize for any inconvenience these activities may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding.

North Runway Post-Flooding Update No. 5

FLL’s North Runway (10L-28R) will be closed temporarily overnight starting Monday, July 22, to facilitate repairs to the Engineer Material Arresting System (EMAS) bed and Runway Status Lights on the airfield’s west end. EMAS beds are critical safety components installed by airports and mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration to help slow or stop an aircraft that overruns the runway. The overnight work will also include repainting of runway markings.

The nightly closure will occur during the following times, including weekends:

• Monday, July 22 to Thursday, August 1, 2024, from 10:30PM to 6AM

During these overnight periods, the South Runway (10R-28L) will remain in use for all aircraft operations. Residents living south and west of the airport may experience increased aircraft operations.

We apologize for any inconvenience this activity may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding.

North Runway Post-Flooding Operations Update No. 3

FLL’s North Runway (10L-28R) will undergo runway safety area maintenance starting Friday, October 13. The activity will intermittently occur in two phases. As a result of this work, flight operations on 10L-28R will be reduced to comply with FAA safety regulations during the periods outlined below:

Phase I - 6AM, Friday, October 13, to 10PM on Tuesday, October 17

• Phase II - 6AM, Wednesday, October 18, to 10PM on Sunday, October 29

Consequently, the South Runway (10R-28L) will be utilized during these periods, and especially overnight, from 10:30PM until around 6AM. As such, residents south and west of the airport may experience increased aircraft operations.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding.

North Runway Post-Flooding Operations Update No. 2

North Runway Post-Flooding Ops - Update No. 2-web.png

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) restored unrestricted operations on its 9,000-foot North Runway (10L-28R) as of 4PM on May 18, 2023.  The full restoration of North Runway operations follows federal approval of temporary repairs to airfield areas damaged during April’s historic rainfall and flooding.  As a result, neighborhoods immediately south and west of the South Runway should start seeing a decrease in late-night/early AM flight activity. However, additional adjustments to the North Runway’s operations will occur when materials become available to fully repair the damage on this airfield.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding. Updates will be shared when new information is available.

North Runway Post-Flooding Operations Update  No. 1

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) experienced an unprecedented rain event on April 12, 2023, resulting in severe flooding and extensive damage to some areas of the North Runway (10L-28R).

While FLL has made significant strides in recovering from the flooding, flight operations on the North Runway remain at reduced capacity due to ongoing assessments and work to restore impacted airfield areas to their previous capabilities.

As such, neighborhoods immediately south and west of the South Runway may see increased flight activity than previously experienced during specific periods of the day until further notice.

We apologize for any inconvenience and ask for your patience and understanding as we work diligently to ensure the North Runway meets all safety and regulatory requirements to resume 100% operations as soon as possible.

When new information is available, the airport will post updates on the North Runway's progress.
