Lost/Found

​​​​Time is essential when trying to find your lost pet, especially if your pet is not wearing a Broward County Rabies Registration Tag or has no tattoo or microchip containing identification information. Broward County Animal Care is required to hold lost pets with identification for five (5) days (not including holidays and when the shelter is closed) and animals without identification for three (3) days, hoping that they can be reunited with their owners.

Animal Care recommends you immediately take these two steps to maximize your chances of reuniting with your pet:

  1. Report a lost pet and view found pets on Pawboost
  2. Report a lost pet and view found pets at  24Petconnect: Lost, Found, and Adoptable Animals​​

View Found Pets at our Shelter

View photos of all the dogs and cats in our shelter. If you see your pet listed, please visit the shelter in person immediately to positively identify and reclaim your pet. You can also call us at 954-359-1313 or email us directly at admissions@broward.org to place a hold on a pet and receive instructions on how to reclaim your lost pet.

​​PLEASE NOTE: We will always attempt to call you if your dog or cat comes into our Adoption Center and has identification (Broward County Rabies Registration Tag, tattoo, microchip, or ID tag). However, as a pet owner, it is your responsibility to contact us about your lost pet and to make every effort to find them.

Reporting a Found Pet

​​If you find a lost dog or cat, there are many ways you can help reunite the pet with its owner:

  1. Contact the owner listed on the ID tag.
  2. Search​ our Pet Registration Database for pets with a Broward County Registration Tag, tattoo, or microchip.
  3. Have the pet scanned for a microchip at a local veterinary clinic

Please report found pets to ACADFoundPets@broward.org. You can also report found pets on Pawboost​ and 24Petconnect: Lost, Found and Adoptable Animals.


​Reporting a Found Pet Without I.D.

​​​While it’s more difficult to reunite a lost pet with its owner when it has no identification, there are still things you can do to achieve a happy reunion: 

  1. Please report a found pet by emailing ACADFoundPets@broward.org​.

Pet Registration Database

You can use this database to view information about your pet's registration or to search for information on the owner of a lost cat or dog that you have found. You can search the database by using the pet's registration tag number or tattoo number. If your search is successful, the owner’s name, address, phone number, and description of the registered animal will appear.

The database is updated regularly; however it is possible that a valid registration number may not appear. We may not have received the rabies certificate from the veterinarian, for example. Or, new registration information may be awaiting data entry. For questions, please call 954-359-1313.

Registration Tag Number Search

  1. Enter the letter "L" (for license), followed by the last two digits of the year the license was issued (2012 would be "12" ) and then enter a hyphen ("-") L12-
  2. Enter the registration tag number exactly as it appears on the tag. There should be no spaces between the L, the year, the hyphen and the tag number.

    Example: a registration tag issued in 2012 would be entered as L12-002954

Tattoo Number Search​
The tattoo number is located on the animal's inner right thigh.​​​

  1. Enter the letters "BC" followed by the last two digits of the year the tattoo was applied (2010 would be "10") and then enter a hyphen ("-"). BC10-
  2. Enter the remaining numbers (up to four digits). Do not add spaces between the characters and numbers; do not add zeros.

    Example: a tattoo applied in 2010 would be entered as BC10-1104

Complete the Search
Once the registration tag or tattoo number is entered, click Search.
