What is "Pioneer Day"?
"Pioneer Day" is an honorific event sponsored by the Broward County Historic Preservation Board in recognition of residents of Broward, who, through their professional or business, civic, educational, historic, artistic or inspirational contributions, have made an impact to the local communities.
Held by the Historic Preservation Board and the Cultural Division in conjunction with a hosting municipality or municipal historical society, the event rotates year-to-year among Broward's 31 municipalities.
When is "Pioneer Day"?
In 1973, the first Pioneer Day was celebrated, in conjunction with "Heritage Celebration", both Historical Commission events. This was observed during the month of May, nationally and state recognized as "Preservation Month". Starting in 1974 to 2010, these were celebrated around October timeframe. While both Pioneer Day and Heritage Celebration were celebrated over a two-day period that included booths, costumes, music and fanfare, in 2005 this became a one-day event.
From 2011 to 2014, the two events were separated with Pioneer Day the main focus, now sponsored by the Historical Commission and the Libraries Division. Heritage Celebration was still observed in May through differing sponsors, Pioneer Day was observed either in October or December, depending on host availability.
Quiet for 2015 and 2016, Pioneer Day annual event was re-established in 2017 under the new Historic Preservation Board, back to its initial May timeframe, National Preservation Month. This event is co-sponsored each year with the Broward County Cultural Division and hosted by a select municipality.
In 2022, Pioneer Day will be hosted by the City of Wilton Manors at the Hagen Park Community Center, 2020 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, 33305. The celebration be on Saturday, October 15, and will start at 12 noon.
What are the "Pioneer Day" honors?
One person from each municipality is nominated and honored each year at the ceremony for their impact to their community. In turn, the Historic Preservation Board awards four additional categories to a person or group specific to the scope of that award.
- Judge Clayton Nance Memorial Award - This is presented to a person or group devoted to the study of local history, support of historical research, preservation, or for helping promote local history and resources.
- Dr. Cooper C. Kirk Award - This is presented to those involved in writing or supporting efforts regarding local history.
- Historic Preservation Board Special Award - This is presented to a person or group who has contributed to the mission of Broward's Historic Preservation Board to help preserve the local sites of historic, architectural, cultural and archaeological significance.
