Snapshot Update #1 on Hurricane Milton

Broward County is monitoring for local weather impacts from Hurricane Milton, when it reaches the west coast of the Florida peninsula early Wednesday afternoon as a probable Category 3 Hurricane. The general timeframe of local impacts is Tuesday through early Thursday; however, the storm’s final trajectory is uncertain, and all potential impacts for South Florida are currently in play, including flooding rainfall, strong/damaging winds, and tornadoes.

At the 5PM Sunday update, probability of sustained tropical storm force winds had increased. Probability of Hurricane force gusts and winds remain low. The earliest reasonable time of arrival of Tropical Storm Force winds for South Florida is Tuesday evening.

Another tropical disturbance is generating above normal rainfall for portions of Broward County today and early next week, before Milton makes landfall. This intensifies the danger of localized flooding, as does South Florida’s above normal rainfall over the last 30 days. Broward County is under a Flood Watch through Thursday morning.

On Saturday, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a local state of emergency for most Florida counties, including Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties.

Here are the latest updates on Broward County’s activities:

  • As of 5PM Sunday, all agencies of Broward County Government are expected to be open for business as usual on Monday. The Broward County Emergency Operations Center is at Level 3 (Monitoring).
  • At this time, the Tuesday, October 8 meeting of the Broward County Commission is expected to take place as scheduled. Any changes will be dependent on weather updates tomorrow.
  • As always in a weather emergency, those who are traveling this week should contact their airline and/or cruise line for latest operating updates for transportation leaving from and arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), North Perry Airport (HWO) and Port Everglades (PEV). Delays are possible.
  • Broward County Transit is communicating with operators and prepared to establish detours if necessary and notify riders of any service disruptions.
  • County contractors have been contacted and asked to secure active project sites, including the Convention Center and Hotel sites.
  • South Florida Water Management lowered the canal control gates on Friday afternoon to bring system levels down over the weekend. Conditions will be reassessed on Monday morning for additional adjustment.
  • Public Works agencies have staff on standby and are coordinating with Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to assist in quickly responding to any issues on County maintained streets, highways and bridges. Staff have been engaged in clearing drains throughout the County, have checked pumps and staged pumps in strategic locations, and have additional pumps available to deploy when needed. Resources are staged to effect a quick response to any flooding incidents in Broward Municipal Services District (BMSD) communities and the Office of the Medical Examiner & Trauma Services and Animal Care.
  • Highway & Bridge Maintenance Division (HBMD) is working with Parks & Recreation to coordinate sandbag distribution. Details will follow tomorrow. Facilities Management has deployed sandbags to facilities vulnerable to flooding, including Governmental Center East and Government Center West.

Executive leadership continues to work with our Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with County agencies, municipalities and others as necessary, to prepare and respond to any impacts.
