Hurricane Milton continues to move toward Florida’s west coast at approximately 9 miles per hour. It is currently a Category 5 storm, with landfall expected in the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday evening. Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties are under a Tropical Storm Warning and all of South Florida is under a Flood Watch through Thursday morning. Potential impacts for Broward County include excessive rainfall resulting in localized flooding, strong/damaging winds and tornadoes. The arrival of Tropical Storm force winds in Broward County is expected to be 8-11PM on Wednesday through Thursday midday. Broward County is not under an evacuation order at this time.

Here are the latest updates on Broward County’s activities:

  • County Administrator Monica Cepero declared a Local State of Emergency for Broward County on Monday afternoon. Also on Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order #24-216 which extended the local state of emergency for Flash Flooding in five South Florida counties originally declared in Executive Order #24-115 , which was set to expire on October 8. The local state of emergency declared by Executive Order #24-215 on Saturday remains in effect.

Residents are reminded to be vigilant for flash flooding and tornadic activity and follow safety precautions. Visit the County’s Hurricane website, A-Z Guide, and select “Flooding” and “Tornados” for safety information and protective measures on these and other topics. Flash flooding may be exacerbated by the seasonal high (“King”) tides South Florida experiences.

Executive leadership continues to work with our Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with County agencies, Broward municipalities, Broward County Public Schools, neighboring jurisdictions and others as necessary, to prepare and respond to any impacts.
