Public Defender
The Public Defender’s Office is responsible for representing persons who cannot afford to hire a private attorney for legal counsel. The Clerk of the Courts determines a person’s eligibility for the public defender. The Public Defender’s Office handles capital and non-capital felony cases, as well as misdemeanor cases, juvenile cases and involuntary commitment cases.

This office is not an agency of the Broward County Commission, however the County Commission owns and maintains the facilities it operates in, and funds some operations of the Courts, State Attorney’s Office and Public Defender’s Office.
