Broward's Resilience Team Innovates with Drones
Broward County's Resilient Environment Department welcomes the recent delivery of several new drones to be deployed in resilience work. The new drones have thermal sensors, visual cameras, and LiDAR payloads that can be adapted to different mission profiles.
In December 2023 Dr. Gregory Mount, Assistant Chief Resilience Officer, hosted “Drone Day" to introduce the equipment to County staff across multiple Departments and Divisions. Drones have already proven invaluable in the County's resilience efforts, including deployment following the April 12 rain event when drones were used to assess damage to school facilities while many roads remained impassible.
With this additional investment, the team anticipates accelerating post storm assessments, impacts, and recovery with improved internal capabilities of mapping of tree canopy, finished floor elevations, beach erosion, and flood depths, information vital to informing resilience planning and adaptation needs.
