Monica Cepero
Monica Cepero began serving as County Administrator in March 2022 after previously serving as Deputy County Administrator.
Professional Background
Monica Cepero brings more than 32 years of state and local government management experience to the role of County Administrator. The County Administrator serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Broward County, the 17th largest county in the country with a population of more than 1.9 million residents and a $7.8 billion budget. Ms. Cepero directs the functions of government that fall under the auspices of the Board of County Commissioners, which include a workforce of nearly 7,000 employees in more than 60 agencies, the world-class Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the world's 3rd busiest cruiseport Port Everglades, and the award winning Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Ms. Cepero joined Broward County in 2008 as an Assistant to the County Administrator. Five years later she was named Assistant County Administrator and in 2017 became Deputy County Administrator. She has served as County Administrator since March 2022.
Ms. Cepero is a Cuban American born in Puerto Rico. Prior to joining Broward County, she served as an advisor to then Florida Governor Jeb Bush on local government issues, environmental and agricultural matters, and other major statewide reform initiatives. Prior to that, she worked in the Miami office of PBS&J (now Atkins North America, Inc.) as Manager of Strategic Positioning and Public Affairs. Her career in public service began during her post-graduate studies when she worked for the City of Tallahassee for eight years serving in a variety of positions in the City Manager's Office and the Office of Management and Budget overseeing operations of public safety, parks, and utilities.
Education
Ms. Cepero has a Bachelor of Science degree in International Affairs with a Minor in Business Administration and a Master of Public Administration degree with a Specialization in Local Government Administration, both from Florida State University.
Professional Affiliations
Ms. Cepero was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2020 to a four-year term as a Commissioner on the Florida Commission on Human Relations and was confirmed by the Florida Senate. In 2021, Equality Florida awarded her a Voice for Equality Award. In 2022, she was honored by Hispanic Unity for extensive dedication to public service and outstanding leadership as Broward County’s first Hispanic County Administrator. In 2023, she received the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Business Advocate Award and was honored by the City of Miramar with a proclamation for her service as County Administrator. In 2024, she was recognized by the YWCA of South Florida with a Trailblazer Award. She is also actively engaged in the following organizations:
