Air Toxics - chemicals that are known or suspected to cause adverse health effects; also known as hazardous air pollutants or toxic air pollutants
AT – see: Air Toxics
ATRA - Air Toxics Risk Assessment; a reference library currently being developed by the EPA
CAA – Clean Air Act; passed in 1970, amended in the 1990s; it has served as the framework to protect people and the environment from the harmful effects of air pollution
Criteria pollutants – six common air pollutants for which the EPA has set national air quality standards; they are ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and lead
Diesel PM – Diesel Particulate Matter
DPEP – Broward County, Department of Planning & Environmental Protection (former department name)
EPA – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
EPD – Broward County Environmental Protection Department (current department name)
GC/MS – Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry
HAP – Hazardous Air Pollutant; also known as air toxic or toxic air pollutant
MACT – Maximum Achievable Control Technology; standards developed by the EPA for controlling emissions of air toxics from each major industrial source
NATA – National Air Toxics Assessment; developed by the U.S. EPA to model exposure to 32 air toxics plus diesel particulate matter (diesel PM). These pollutants present the greatest threat to public health in the largest number of urban areas.
NEI – National Emissions Inventory
NTI – National Toxics Inventory
PM – Particulate Matter
TRI – Toxics Release Inventory
