Finding a New Home For Your Pet

Taking your animal to the shelter should be your last resort. Shelters serve an important purpose in our community by caring for animals who lack families to advocate for them or pose a threat to public safety. It is the goal of this guide to encourage our community to utilize all available options before surrendering a pet to the shelter.

Making the decision to rehome a pet is a difficult one. We created this guide to help our community navigate the process humanely, with as little stress on the pet and their family as possible. Remember, choosing to rehome your animal isn't abandonment. You are their advocate, and it is important to help them find the best new home possible.

Take great photos! Potential adopters connect more emotionally with photos when the subject (your animal) is looking directly at the camera. Make sure you avoid clutter in the background and focus on your pet’s winning personality! Ensure your pet is well groomed and can be seen clearly.

Tell potential adopters what it is about your pet that makes him/her special. Compose an ad that focuses on their good qualities. Don’t be afraid to sprinkle a little humor in there! Include important information like age, weight, sex and breed. Include any disabilities, health issues or behavioral quirks.

Once you’ve decided on a new home for your pet. Meet the adopter in a safe, public place. You may consider a public park, a police station, a nearby animal care facility or veterinarian’s office to meet at. Make sure to exchange contact information with the new owner, in case any follow up is needed.
