Sand dunes are an important part of the County's shoreline protection strategy. Dunes provide natural coastal protection against storm surge and high waves, reducing coastal flooding and structural damage, as well as providing important ecological habitat. From a resilience standpoint, beaches with vegetated dunes perform better during storms than those beaches without dunes. They also act as sand storage areas, supplying sand to eroded beaches.
In furtherance of community resilience, Broward County has established a goal to create, revegetate and maintain sand dunes along 80% of the County's shoreline to enhance our coastal resilience. The County works to achieve this goal by ensuring prominent integration of sand dunes in the design and construction of each County-sponsored beach construction project and a dune grant program that provides local sponsors up to $5k cost share for local dune construction and enhancement projects.
