HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH
May 2025 is dedicated to National Preservation Month. Also known as Historic Preservation Month, the month celebrates the nation's heritage through historic places. Organizations across the country promote a variety of activities on local, state, and national levels. Whether you are interested in touring historical sites or helping to preserve the history in your backyard, there is something for everyone.
What you can do:
- Discover parts of your city you've never seen before! Get lost and study local history, architecture, archaeology. Speak to the people in the know...either historians, an older family member or someone in your beighborhood. Seek the untold stories!
- Visit local museums and learn the history of your community. Watch for film and documentaries on history. Then learn even more. Find out about the orgins of the area before your city or county's charter!
- Visit a historic area, building or site by car, bicylce, boat or walking! Remember to take photographs of your visit!
- Learn about volunteer opportunities in your area. You might be able to participate in an event, reeanctment, help archive materials or help in an archaeological dig!
- Check your attic, basement, garage, or closets. Do you have historical documents or photos that may contribute to your community's history?
- Join a preservation organization.

How
When you visit our partner sites, you will have the opportunity to see firsthand how Historic Preservation fits into our world. Several of these historical museums and historic landmarks offer a free tour.
Or how about a photo contest? BTHP is sponsoring the Mid-Century Modern Quest for lovers of Mid-Century Modern architecture.
Once Historic Preservation Month is over, you may still visit the sites listed. Here are links to our partners and more information about the Photo Contest. For all this information and more, Broward Trust for Historic Preservation.

Certified Local Governments (CLG)
Certified Local Governments are municipal and county governments which have made historic preservation a public policy through the passage of a historic preservation ordinance. Participation in the CLG program allows local governments to partner with State and Federal Agencies and other CLGs to share preservation ideas and experiences, as well as the opportunity to compete for CLG grants.
Training is periodically held throughout the year in various locations. As we become aware of the next training dates and locations, we will post them here.
For more information about Broward County's CLG program, please contact the Historic Preservation Officer at rferrer@broward.org or call 954-357-9731.
