About Traffic Engineering Division

Purpose

The purpose of the Broward County Bicycling and Pedestrian Advisory Committee is to study and advise the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, with the cooperation and assistance of the County Administrator, on all matters related to bicycling and walking (Chapter 12, Section 12.217, Broward County Administrative Code).

History

The committee was originally created by Broward County Resolution on October 6, 1981, with a focus on bicycling.  In 2005, the committee name was amended by resolution to the Bicycling and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) and the duties were expanded to include pedestrian concerns. The BPAC consists of ten members, with each of the nine Broward County Commissioners appointing one representative and one appointed by the Broward League of Cities.

March is Bicycle Month

March is Bicycle Month throughout the State of Florida. Broward County residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in Bicycle Month events being held.  The Broward County Board of County Commissioners issued a new proclamation in 2024 that encourages residents and visitors to practice bicycle safety and to always be aware of cyclists on our roads.

BPAC Goals

At the beginning of 2023, the BPAC developed several goals for future implementation and agreed to focus initially on a selection. At the March 8, 2023 meeting, the BPAC unanimously adopted to implement the following goals over the next 1-3 years:

  • Submit to the Board of County Commissioners by the end of 2024 a priority list of the top 10 policy proposals/best practices by local governments to increase the safety of cyclist and pedestrians and to encourage mode shift to walking, cycling, and public transit from private automobiles.

  • Have a focus group presentation from and provide comments to the “Low Stress Multimodal Mobility Transportation Master Plan” team at the Initial, Draft and Final Plan development phases.

  • Review and provide input on bike/ped facilities to no less than 5 FDOT projects and 5 Broward County projects. Projects should be reviewed prior to the commencement of 60% plan preparation.

  • Publish to the BPAC website an info piece for developers and architects with at least 10 best practices for incorporating and encouraging active travel in their development by the end of 2024.

  • Communicate with at least 5 local bicycle clubs and 5 local schools or youth bicycle clubs, by the end of 2024 to ask them to share their opinions in writing, or in person at a BPAC meeting, about the current and future state of walking and cycling in Broward County, and encourage active commutes by organizing activities, including bike buses to schools.
