Redistricting is the process of redrawing boundaries for political districts in the United States and is required by state law to account for population changes following the decennial census to ensure equal representation. After input from the public, Broward County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on December 7, 2021 for Map C drawn by Florida International University (FIU), the County's partner in the 2021 redistricting process. Four final draft maps were submitted before voting.
In 2018, Broward County’s voters approved an amendment to the Broward County Charter that modified the County’s approach to redistricting. This amendment reinforces the County’s policy of protecting voting rights by prohibiting racial or partisan gerrymandering. In addition, the Broward County Charter requires the County to retain a public Florida college or university to draw the County Commission districts. After reviewing submissions from colleges and universities across Florida, FIU was chosen as the County's partner.
